Daily Business Bulletin – May 5, 2020

In order to keep you informed on the evolving impact of COVID-19 on our local community, the Plano Chamber will be publishing updates every weekday as the Daily Business Bulletin. We will share the top news items that you need to read to stay up-to-date on important health, community, and business issues as they develop.

STATE

Governor Abbott provided the below updates on today’s press conference.

General Updates

  • Testing has doubled throughout the state in the last two weeks and will continue to increase
  • The rate at which people are testing positive is down to 4.6% (was at 10% in the beginning of April)

Re-openings

  • Effective Friday, 5/8, barber shops, beauty salons, tanning salons can open with social distancing and some precautions such as limiting people in the shop, etc
  • Effective Monday, 5/18, gyms can re-open with up to 25% capacity, maintaining social distancing standards, showers and locker rooms must remain closed, all equipment must be disinfected after each use, and clients should use gloves that cover their hands
  • They are still working on developing safe plan for bars to reopen
  • Effective Monday, 5/18, non-essential manufacturers may reopen with 25% occupancy limitation and staggered workforce hours
  • Effective Monday, 5/18, office building businesses can reopen to greater of 5 employees OR 25% of workforce as long as social distancing can be maintained

Flare-Ups

  • There will be flare-ups as Texas reopens – industries such as meatpacking plants are seeing higher rates of infection, etc.  Our capabilities allow Texas to monitor these on a daily basis and respond to them.  PPE supply chain is getting stronger and distributions of materials are increasing and mobile testing sites are ready to head to hot spots.

Graduations

  • TEA is publishing guidance on graduations and end-of-year promotion ceremonies to occur in schools subject to certain constraints.  Options will include a hybrid of virtual and physical ceremonies, vehicle ceremonies, and outdoor graduation ceremonies with appropriate distancing between families.
