LP 40 for 40 – John P. Shockey

The Plano Chamber of Commerce’s signature program, Leadership Plano, celebrates its 40th anniversary! For the past 40 years, Leadership Plano has been dedicated to educating, developing, and empowering current and future leaders for the community and motivating them to serve civic, charitable, and business organizations.
We are celebrating the impact of the past 40 years by spotlighting 40 Leadership Plano graduates who have paved the way for future generations, created meaningful change for the community, and continue to serve in leadership roles. This celebratory series, Leadership Plano 40 for 40, is Presented by UBS – The Kravitz Group.

Introducing our next spotlight, Leadership Plano Class 3 Graduate, John P. Shockey. John is the founder of the accounting, tax, & financial planning firm, Shockey, Masters, Whitehurst & Associates, Inc. John earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Arkansas, where he later went on to serve as the Student Union Director. He is currently a member of the Texas, Arkansas, and Nebraska Bar Associations.
Upon graduating from Leadership Plano, John went on to serve as the Chair of the Leadership Plano Board and even served as the Program’s Coordinator. His love for leadership is evident. John was a Co-Founder & the first ever Chairman of the Texas Association of Leadership Programs. In addition, he helped to co-found the Plano Youth Leadership Program in 1995, which continues to serve high school sophomores to this day.
John has truly crafted a legacy of leadership, as his son, Doug Shockey, is a fellow graduate of Leadership Plano and two of his grandchildren are graduates of the Plano Youth Leadership Program!
1. What first made you interested in participating in Leadership Plano?
Thought it would be the best way to learn what needs to be done for the community.
2. What is the most memorable part of your experience (or what is something that was happening in Plano that you remember about that year)?
Connecting with the other class members – that is what I hold dear to this day.
3. Why do you think LP is so impactful for our community?
Has a lot of good history of graduates that have given back to Plano.
4. What is one thing you can attribute to LP that is a success in your life or career?
It drew me to start giving back myself wherever I was located.
