Business Bulletin – July 6, 2020

In order to keep you informed on the evolving impact of COVID-19 on our local community, the Plano Chamber will be publishing updates on Mondays and Thursdays as the Business Bulletin. We will share the top news items that you need to read to stay up-to-date on important health, community, and business issues as they develop.

FEDERAL
- Congress is slated to begin serious discussions on a fifth Coronavirus Aid Bill later this month. Senate Majority Leader McConnell indicated that Senate Republicans may be open to including another direct payment to some taxpayers in the bill.
- The delayed tax deadline of July 15th is approaching and you can be confident that there won’t be another delay.
- Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced a 6.5% decline in sales tax revenue, paired with additional lost revenue from the variety of other tax revenue sources the state relies upon, including oil, gas, motor vehicle sales and others.
STATE
- Governor Abbott issued a statewide order requiring masks to be worn by individuals with few exceptions. Counties with less than 20 positive COVID-19 cases are exempt from the order.
- Texas economist Ray Perryman worries that the virus resurge could cause another round of business shutdowns if it cannot be controlled by other measures.
- Governor Abbott indicated he was open to reconsidering whether schools should reopen this fall based on whether the ongoing surge of new cases continues.
- Texans receiving unemployment benefits will get some additional time before being required to prove they are actively trying to find new work, according to the Texas Workforce Commission.
REGIONAL/LOCAL
- The City of Plano will be enforcing the statewide mask ordinance that went into effect on Friday, including a fine for repeat offenders that do not comply.
