Leadership Plano Curriculum - 2007-2008
The purpose of Leadership Plano is to identify, educate and develop future leaders for the community of Plano and to motivate these potential leaders for civic, charitable and community involvement.
2007-08 LEADERSHIP PLANO CURRICULUM
(The order of session topics may change based on availability of facilities and presenters.)
Sept. 15-16, 2007,
3rd Saturday and Sunday OPENING RETREAT (Mandatory Attendance)
Class members meet for the first time and begin their leadership adventure with a two-day retreat. Participants spend the first day discovering their own leadership style and learning how to best utilize style differences. The next day members participate in a series of out-door initiatives involving team-building, problem-solving, trust and risk-taking.
Oct. 18, 2007,
3rd Thursday,
8 am – 5 pm, CITY HISTORY & LOCAL GOVERNMENT,
A look at the past helps participants understand the present and envision the future. The class gains insight into local government and explores the political process as elected and appointed officials address current issues and future challenges facing the city.
New Class Reception, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. (program at 6:30) Reflections on Spring Creek

3rd Thursday,
8 am – 5 pm, EDUCATION,
Classroom visits and presentations by representatives from Plano ISD, CCCC and other educational organizations cover topics such as curriculum, school finance, technology, work force development, community partnerships and challenges facing educational institutions.
Dec. 13, 2007,
2nd Thursday,
8 am – 5 pm PUBLIC SAFETY,
Tours of adult and juvenile justice facilities and presentations by representatives from all sides of the legal spectrum provide participants with an overview of public safety, the criminal justice system, and issues impacting public safety officers and the judiciary.
Jan. 17, 2008,
3rd Thursday,
8 am – 5 pm HEALTH SERVICES,
Presentations by local health care providers and facility tours offer a “real life” view of health services, treatment centers and major health care issues.
Feb. 21, 2008,
3rd Thursday,
8 am – 5 pm BUSINESS & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT and ARTS & CULTURE,
This session provides an overview of programs and services provided by the Plano Chamber of Commerce and examines issues affecting small and large businesses. The session also provides an overview of cultural arts opportunities available in our community.
Mar. 20, 2008,
3rd Thursday,
8 am – 5 pm SIMSOC (Simulated Society) and QUALITY OF LIFE,
To “walk in the shoes” of others can have a major impact on our lives. This simulation raises the participant’s awareness of all levels of society through role-playing, conflict resolution, trust, and crisis management. Members of the “society” must address issues affecting their neighbors, while keeping a “balance” in the society as a whole. The class will also explore opportunities available in the non-profit field by meeting with representatives from the non-profit field and learning how to make an immediate impact in the community.

RELATIONSHIPS/UNDERSTANDING DIVERSITY,
Through a variety of interactive activities, class members will learn effective bridge-building skills to combat inter-group conflicts. Class members will develop skills needed to resolve tensions and address prejudice that can help them become stronger and more effective leaders.
May 15, 2008,
3rd Thursday,
8 am – 5 pm LEADERSHIP CAPACITIES,
This program focuses on individual leadership competencies to enhance the participants’ effectiveness in their business, community and personal life. Through small group activities, presentations and problem-solving initiatives, the session explores effective communication, consensus building, meeting management and leadership responsibilities. The afternoon session looks at “The Year in Review” and challenges participants to develop a personal vision focusing on their individual commitment to community and future involvement.
